WHY I GET UP IN THE MORNING.

To take on the challenges of the day and to embrace the unknown that life presents.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT ME?

Like everyone, I get discouraged. I like the fact that I never, ever stay discouraged for very long. I will ever be an optimist.

Meet Ian mitchell-gill

“Light yourself on fire with passion and people will come from miles to watch you burn.”―John Wesley

Ian Mitchell-Gill has worn many hats over the course of his life: lifeguard, athlete, martial artist, public speaker, salesman, musician, bouncer. He currently works as a schoolteacher. A lifelong reader, he began writing to create samples for his students to help them understand how a story is developed and created. He and his students enjoyed the process so much that he began to write a chapter a week to share with them.

Ian says the students were often the inspiration for the story: “I was constantly amazed at the many rich and varied abilities of my students and what they could accomplish.” His many experiences and interests proved to be valuable background for some of the characters and situations in the book.

Ian lives in Oshawa, Ontario with his wife and two daughters. He continues to teach.

“It’s strange because sometimes, I read a book, and I think I am the people in the book.”

I don’t think I’m strange but I think that other people think that I’m strange. You know what I mean? Growing up in rural Kentucky I had to make a lot of my own fun, which is where I first sprouted my wild imagination. I started making up stories as a kid, and then eventually began writing them down. I still write down stories, only now I know a lot of bigger and better words. I used to also entertain myself by reading, which is something I also still partake in. I read anywhere from 100 to 300+ books a year, and I write reviews about most, if not all, of them. Books are a very passionate hobby for me, in case you couldn’t already tell.

Besides writing and being an avid reader and book reviewer, I am also a National Parks enthusiast. This coincides nicely with my love of travel, and I try to go somewhere new or visit a few parks every year. A lot of times these travels are inspiration for stories, or for settings that I’d like to use later on. I also have a day job that has me out of the house six days a week, but I’d prefer to leave that where it belongs: as far away as possible.

I have two dogs and a cat who occupy a lot of my time and money, and they are all named after fictional characters that I love. Some of my other passions in life include music (concert going and vinyl collecting), buying rare/varying editions of Stephen King and JK Rowling books, languages (primarily French), craft projects, nerd culture, and horror movies.

WHY I GET UP IN THE MORNING.

Because the world tells me I have to go to work. I don’t recommend it.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT ME?

My ability to devour books far too quickly. It’s sometimes a bit surreal.

“What exactly is the function of the rubber duck?”

I’m eccentric. A lot eccentric. I’m warning you that the following words of introduction will likely make you ask, “How in the world?” I wish I knew. I’m the daughter of a fighter pilot, and my family has been on the same farm in North Carolina since they were tossed out of Scotland in the 18th century. So, as a result, I’m a 50/50 mix of fast and furious and old and tweedy. insert head scratch and head tilt

Some of my favorite things include knitting, reading, running, comic books, and anything that blooms. I like single malt scotch, warm sweaters, and thick books. Not necessarily in that order. In my working life, I’ve been a news reporter, a personal assistant, a GIS mapping specialist, and a writer. I’ve also been a bartender which made me a much better writer.

I grow orchids and African violets, drink a lot of tea, and knit more hats than my family could ever wear. My two favorite television shows are Murder, She Wrote and M*A*S*H. And there is no better movie than The Princess Bride. Fight me.

WHY I GET UP IN THE MORNING.

My dog, Friday. She’s an eleven year old mutt—we call her the What the Heck dog because her pedigree is so very, very muddy. Her tail wags front to back instead of side to side, her head is way too big for her body, and yet she makes me feel like the coolest person in the world. Even when I’m binge watching Stranger Things for the ten thousandth time.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT ME?

I’m a wee bit witty and I love to make people laugh.

WHY I GET UP IN THE MORNING.

My kids. (And my characters!)

FAVORITE THING ABOUT ME?

During those moments in life when you can either laugh or cry, I usually choose laughter.

“Books are the best.” -my son

I’ve lived in DC, Virginia, NYC, and North Carolina, but I was born and raised a Jersey girl and still consider myself one at heart.
I have a master’s degree from Georgetown University’s Communication, Culture, and Technology program. Of the many job titles I’ve held—including Editorial Consultant, Art Director, Graphic Designer, Barista, and Door-to-Door Knife Salesperson—Mom is my absolute favorite. But Author is a close second! My first novel, WAIT FOR IT, was published in 2019.
When I’m not writing, I’m reading. Or baking. Or taking to the open road in our family’s trusty minivan, looking for our next big adventure.

WHY I GET UP IN THE MORNING.

I don’t. Mornings are for suckers!

FAVORITE THING ABOUT ME?

My intuition. My gut instinct. Never steers me wrong.

“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”

I grew up in a small town, and a big family. The thing about small towns—more than the suburbs, more than the city—is they grow dreamers. Because there’s so much open space, so many dark forests and deep rivers, magic never seems very far away.

When I was about 10, my father took me to a garage sale. Already an avid reader, I went straight for the books dumped on the blue tarpaulin. This is where I found Harry Potter for the first time. I’d never imagined anything like it. My dad told me to pick one—we went home with three.

Books have been a vital part of my life since then; a way to arm myself against a world that is too often bleak, and lacking in magic (no matter how small your town is).

When I’m not reading or writing, I’m hanging out with my two dogs, Han and Chewie, or tending to my tiny garden (which is mostly still living). I have a soft spot for photography, the colour yellow and talking through bad movies.

WHY I GET UP IN THE MORNING.

 To continue the story.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT ME?

My impressive sock collection.

“Where is fancy bred? In the heart or in the head?”

I’m a freak. A weirdo. Someone who can be categorized in only one way and that is eclectic, which in itself says I can’t be categorized. I’m a reader of all the things, a music lover, and I’m equipped with a fickle heart when it comes to making decisions.

More simply stated, I’m an author & entrepreneur. In the past I founded and grew the ever popular Gilmore-Inspired subscription box company that morphed into the all things fandom-loving brand, SophistiGeek! We went from a $7,000 Kickstarter to over a Million in sales in 1.5 years!

WHY I GET UP IN THE MORNING.

I don’t. Mornings are for suckers!

FAVORITE THING ABOUT ME?

WHY I GET UP IN THE MORNING.

To let the madness out.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT ME?

My readiness to cry.

Meet Brian toups

“Life is here now, breathe it all in. Let it all go, you are earth and wind.”

Brian Toups grew up on the beach reading the Narnia series, water skiing, and writing sweeping 500,000 word epics inspired by 32-bit video games. He is a child at heart and can be found on the dock, sometimes reading, sometimes falling asleep with a book on his face.

He graduated from Florida State University with degrees in Philosophy and Creative Writing. He has worked as a tutor, gymnastics coach, and campground host, but has never once averted his eyes from the dream of being an author. His work has been featured in Zetetic and Every Day Fiction. His debut novel, Star Kin, was released on June 20, 2019.

Today, Brian lives part time on Earth, part time in the multiverse of fantasy. When not telling stories, he enjoys meeting new characters, both real and imaginary, and counts Aragorn, Kvothe, Ged, and St. Thomas Aquinas among his confidants. He does backflips, handstands, and quotes Aristotle frequently, to the dismay of his close friends. He also enjoys ridiculously long road trips with his wife in their camper van, Odin.
